Siebenschläferkirche (Rotthof)
The Siebenschläferkirche is a church in Rotthof, a district of Ruhstorf an der Rott in the district of Passau .
The very rare patronage is reminiscent of the dormice of Ephesus. It goes back to two gravestones from Roman times set into the outer wall, which show three or four people. In the Baroque era, they were mistakenly interpreted as dormice.
In 1758 Johann Baptist Modler made the new high altar for the church. Side altars and pulpit followed in 1763/1764. The baroque altar was redesigned with the simplest means (boxes, tuff stone, shells) to create the illusion of a grotto into which colored light penetrates. In this illusory space, the seven youngsters dream of the artist Modler, who also designed the rest of the furnishings. With this creation, the Rotthofer facility is one of the best of folk rococo art in Bavaria.
